Sage has an earthy smell and a feminine energy. If you’re using sage, look for California white sage (which is different from the sage you would cook with). Burning sage is one of the oldest methods of cleansing a person, group of people, objects, or space. The practice dates back to prehistoric times and it’s been used in every corner of the world. The Latin word for sage, salvia, means to heal. Burning sage has traditionally been associated with increasing wisdom, clarity, and spiritual awareness. When sage is burned, it releases negative ions, a natural way of putting people into a more positive mood. On a practical level, scientists have observed that sage can clear up to 94 percent of airborne bacteria in a space.
Palo Santo has a masculine energy and its smell is reminiscent of a temple, with notes of pine and lemon. It is a sacred wood that grows on the coast of South America and has been used by the indigenous shamans of the Andes and the Amazon for centuries. (In Spanish, the name literally means “holy stick.”)
Selenite is a high-vibrational stone so it raises the energy of the environment in which it resides.

Instructions for use:
Before performing any smudging ritual or ceremony, it's a good idea to clean or arrange the space in which you'll be doing this work to create a sacred container.
Open all windows to the room or home to be cleansed to allow for any old, unwanted energy to be released from your home, light the Californian White Sage and allow it to burn before carefully blowing out the flame.
Walk and Fan: Now you can start clearing your space. Walk slowly through the space while holding a small bowl or abalone shell and begin fanning the sage or palo santo smoke around the room you are cleansing with a feather. If you start to see the glow of the embers fading, blow on the end that’s lit—but gently so you don’t send ash flying onto your outfit or carpet.
Bring forth any stresses, anxieties or negative/dense energy and see then burn away with the smoke. White sage is known for enhancing feelings of peace & for it's soothing properties.
Light the Palo Santo in the same way, to allow positive energy to flow through your space.
Hold the Selenite stick and imagine a white light forming around you and your home, washing all the bad energies away. You may also feel to place this on the mantle above your front door inside your home, or above any doorway in your home to keep the energy flowing beautifully throughout your home.
Say a Mantra: Once you have the area ventilated and the herbs lit, you may like to ask the unwanted energy to leave the space—out loud. You may wish to light your favourite candle or incense that makes you feel inspired before stating your mantra. We encourage you to use your intuition here and go with what comes, but here are a few examples to assist:
Moving into a new home:
'Hello, my name is ___; I am moving into this space. I want to thank all of the land stewards and spirits of the land. I want to acknowledge the first people of the land. I want to state my intention of creating a home for myself here, living in reciprocity with the spirits that are present.
To invite Love in:
'I open this space to divine love, may all the energy that flows through here benefit the heart space. May it hold compassion, nurturance, forgiveness, and truth.'
If you are selling your home:
'I give my gratitude to this home for creating a container that held me and watched me grow over the past ___ years. I honour the completion of our karmic cycle together and I call in the next cycle that is aligned with my highest spirit and the highest spirit of this home. May we call in the person that is in perfect alignment to tend to this space. May this next cycle be of benefit to all involved.'
To remove negative energy:
'I command any negativity, any low vibrational energy, and nonbenevolent beings within this space to leave and go to the light. You are not welcome here. I command you to leave and go to the light.'
To invite productivity into your space:
'I call in the divine abundance of creativity [or inspiration, productivity, etc.]. May the [project, artwork, contract, etc.] I feel within my heart come to fruition in a form that benefits my highest good. May it be manifested into the form that best expresses its truth.'
